McKeever’s Market adopts EBT payments for Instacart smart carts

Shoppers using EBT SNAP benefits at McKeever’s Market locations in Missouri and Kansas can now pay directly at the shelf. Instacart has integrated EBT processing into its Caper Carts, removing the need for customers to visit a traditional checkout lane to complete their grocery purchases with government-issued benefit cards.

The new functionality, powered by the payment processor Forage, builds upon existing features that allow Caper Carts to identify and track SNAP-eligible items in real time. By enabling direct payment, the technology aims to provide a more discreet and efficient experience for SNAP households, aligning the checkout process with that of standard debit or credit card users.

Tim Cosens, Chief Technology Officer at McKeever’s, noted that the retailer previously utilized the carts to help customers manage grocery budgets. David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart, described the rollout as a push to reduce friction for families, allowing them to bypass the typical unloading process at registers while maintaining consistent access to budget tracking and aisle-side deal discovery.
