The collection, titled Connecting a Nation, catalogs a diverse array of essential infrastructure, including 79 bridges and tunnels, 68 highways, and 35 ports and waterways. By surveying industry experts, state officials, and academics, the association identified landmarks that fundamentally improved mobility and safety. Iconic engineering feats such as the Transcontinental Railroad, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the 47,000-mile Interstate Highway System anchor the list, serving as examples of how strategic investment drives long-term national growth.
ARTBA President Dave Bauer noted that these projects offer a clear lesson: infrastructure investment yields dividends for decades. While the list celebrates historical milestones ranging from the Erie Canal to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the organization views the anniversary as a call to action. Bauer emphasized that the current systems exist only because of the foresight of previous generations, suggesting that sustained commitment is required to maintain American competitiveness as the country enters its next 250 years.
