North Carolina’s contributions include the Blue Ridge Parkway, which draws 16.5 million annual visitors, the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, the high-traffic Charlotte International Airport, and the Alligator River Bridge and Tunnel. South Carolina is represented by the iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, the historic Charleston-Hamburg Railroad, the innovative Gaffney T-Bridge, and the Best Friend of Charleston, the country’s first passenger steam locomotive.
ARTBA President Dave Bauer noted that these selections serve as a testament to the long-term dividends of strategic investment. The projects were identified through a national survey of industry experts, engineers, and academics, focusing on mobility, safety, and economic development. Beyond celebrating historical milestones, the association emphasized that these sites reflect a legacy of foresight, urging continued commitment to infrastructure development as the country begins its next century of expansion.
