Master Engraver David Sugar Returns to Mark America's 250th Anniversary

After decades away from public commissions, renowned glass artist David Sugar has emerged from retirement to unveil the American Milestones Collection. Commissioned by veteran-founded Patriot Spirit Vodka, the series of seven hand-engraved crystal works commemorates pivotal chapters in the nation's history, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the moon landing.

Sugar, whose work is held by the Smithsonian Institution and the United Nations, collaborated with creative partner Carol Iselin to produce the collection. Each piece is a singular, hand-cut object, reflecting a level of microscopic detail that defies digital reproduction. Rather than entering the retail market, these works will be gifted over the coming year to museums, archives, and institutions that embody the values depicted in the art. Gary Pollakusky, CEO of Northborn Spirits, emphasized that the project is intended to serve as a lasting cultural legacy, using the vodka brand merely as a canvas for a broader narrative of American innovation and sacrifice.

The collection honors seven specific milestones, including the preservation of the Union and the birth of flight. For Sugar, the centerpiece—the 1969 Apollo moon landing—represents the collective effort and harmony of the thousands of individuals behind historic achievements. Housed in a handcrafted walnut case, the series functions as a unified artistic chronicle. This project aligns with Patriot Spirit Vodka’s existing mission to support veterans and charitable causes, marking a return to form for an artist who previously created custom pieces for four U.S. Presidents and icons such as Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder.
