Royal Mail rolls out electric cargo cycles to streamline city deliveries

The rollout utilizes 20 initial units manufactured at Minimal’s West London microfactory. These vehicles offer a 37-mile range and a cargo capacity of 2.5m³, designed to navigate cycle lanes, greenways, and roads with speed limits up to 30 mph. By replacing traditional vans with these cycles, the company intends to simplify route planning and eliminate the logistical bottleneck of searching for parking in dense city environments.

Operational flexibility serves as a core advantage, as the Pedal 4 can be charged via standard three-pin sockets, allowing for deployment in smaller delivery offices that lack specialized infrastructure. Furthermore, because these vehicles do not require a driver’s license, Royal Mail is widening its recruitment pool for delivery staff. Mark Riley, Delivery Design Manager at Royal Mail, noted that the cycles create a more efficient network while reducing the environmental impact in local communities. Patrick Bion, CEO of Minimal, added that the adoption signals a broader shift toward right-sized electric vehicles as the preferred method for urban goods movement.
