Trump Reaffirms U.S. Support for Moroccan Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

President Donald J. Trump has reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, calling Morocco’s autonomy proposal the only viable path to ending the long-standing regional dispute. The message, delivered on the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s ascension to the throne, signals a deepening bilateral alliance.

In his correspondence to the King, President Trump characterized Morocco’s autonomy plan as a serious and credible framework for a lasting solution, dismissing alternative paths as unacceptable extensions of the current status quo. Beyond the diplomatic stance on the territory, the President highlighted the Kingdom’s role as an anchor of regional stability, specifically citing its contributions to the Abraham Accords and its cooperation in counter-extremism efforts across the Sahel.

Economic cooperation remains a central pillar of this renewed engagement. Trump noted that he has directed his administration to actively encourage investment and social development within the Western Sahara territory. The partnership is set to expand into strategic sectors including artificial intelligence, critical minerals, energy, and defense, leveraging American technology to bolster Moroccan growth. This diplomatic exchange coincides with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, acknowledging that Morocco was the first nation to recognize American independence in 1777. The bond between the two nations was further underscored by the recent naming of the 1,055-kilometer Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway as the Donald J. Trump Highway.
