Previously restricted to spouses, the new Associate Membership guidelines now encompass a wider circle of family members tied to current or former civilian federal staff. These individuals can apply for as much as $1.5 million in Group Term Life Insurance coverage. Unlike standard dependent plans, these policies are held by the family members themselves and are fully portable, remaining active regardless of future employment shifts.
Beyond life insurance, these new members gain access to WAEPA’s broader financial ecosystem. This includes complimentary financial planning services provided by EY, eligibility for the organization’s scholarship program, and potential annual premium refunds. CEO M. Shane Canfield noted that the change, approved by the board of directors, aims to reinforce long-term financial security across generations of federal families. Interested applicants can also explore Group Short-Term Disability Insurance options under this expanded eligibility framework.
