Young Americans Are Pushing Back Life Milestones as Financial Anxiety Mounts

Financial pressure is forcing a generation to hit the pause button on adulthood. According to the 2026 Planning & Progress Study from Northwestern Mutual, a staggering 72% of Gen Z and 56% of Millennials have deferred major life events like homeownership, marriage, and starting a family due to economic constraints.

The data reveals a growing sense of hopelessness among younger cohorts, with 71% of Gen Z and 60% of Millennials questioning if they will ever reach these traditional milestones. This pessimism is compounded by a shifting professional landscape; nearly half of Gen Z and one-third of Millennials now fear that artificial intelligence will erode their career stability and long-term earning power.

Despite these headwinds, younger adults are adopting a strategy of early intervention to secure their futures. They are prioritizing retirement savings significantly earlier than their predecessors, with Gen Z starting at age 22—nearly two decades before Gen X. Furthermore, they are engaging with financial advisors at higher rates and younger ages, signaling a shift toward proactive financial management as a defense against economic uncertainty. John Roberts, chief field officer at Northwestern Mutual, noted that while the burden of current costs like housing and childcare remains acute, this focus on long-term planning highlights a resilient, if cautious, approach to building lasting security.
