Skin Cancer Patients Prioritize Autonomy Over Traditional Care Paths

Ninety-six percent of skin cancer patients now demand a diverse range of treatment paths, prioritizing personal autonomy and nonsurgical options over traditional physician-led directives. A new survey of 1,152 respondents reveals a growing friction between patient preferences and the influence of insurance-driven clinical restrictions.

The cross-sectional study, conducted by SkinCure Oncology in early 2026, highlights a distinct shift in how individuals approach nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) diagnoses. While cure rates remain the paramount concern for 84 percent of those surveyed, the desire to avoid surgery ranks second at 58 percent, followed by cosmetic outcomes. Notably, direct physician recommendations, cost, and convenience trailed significantly, each cited by only 19 percent of participants as a primary decision factor.

Data suggests that personal history serves as the strongest predictor for proactive health behavior. Seventy-nine percent of respondents with a documented history of skin cancer undergo annual dermatologic screenings, a rate that drops to 32 percent for those without such experience. As patients become more informed, they are increasingly vocal about the mechanics of their care. According to the findings, 94 percent of respondents expressed concern over insurance limitations, while 96 percent asserted that clinical decisions should remain exclusively between the patient and physician, free from the interference of external entities.

Kerwin Brandt, CEO of SkinCure Oncology, noted that these figures reflect a broader mandate for clinical transparency. Patients are actively seeking nonsurgical solutions like Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (IGSRT) when outcomes match those of invasive procedures. With 1,025 of the 1,152 participants reporting direct or familial experience with the disease, the survey underscores a maturing patient base that values choice and medical necessity over standardized insurance protocols.
