GOP Senators Face Backlash Over Todd Blanche Confirmation Deal

Sens. Thom Tillis and John Cornyn announced their support for Blanche after he issued a written statement rescinding a $1.8 billion fund originally intended to compensate political allies of President Donald Trump. While the senators framed the move as a resolution to their concerns, critics point out the statement lacks the formal legal revisions to the underlying Department of Justice settlement they had previously demanded.

Opposition to the deal remains intense. Sen. Richard Blumenthal characterized the arrangement as a gift of hundreds of millions of dollars to the Trump family, while Rep. Don Beyer labeled the compromise "insane corruption." Beyond the rescinded fund, the agreement leaves intact a provision granting the Trump family immunity from scrutiny regarding past tax returns. Advocates like Lisa Gilbert of Public Citizen warn that without concrete, binding changes, Blanche could easily reestablish the fund once confirmed, ultimately transforming the Justice Department into a tool for presidential retribution.
