K. Michelle Navigates Controversy Over Friendship With Morgan Wallen

As R&B singer K. Michelle prepares for the October release of her debut country album, Jesus and Whiskey, she is facing scrutiny for her vocal support of Morgan Wallen, a friendship that has sparked intense debate regarding his past use of racial slurs and the selective nature of public outrage.

During an appearance on iHeart’s The Breakfast Club, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star identified Wallen as her favorite artist, citing his songwriting as a pivotal influence on her transition into country music. When host Charlamagne tha God pressed her on the 2021 incident where Wallen was recorded using the N-word, Michelle acknowledged that the language was hurtful and wrong, yet she simultaneously characterized the country star as someone deeply embedded in and appreciative of Black culture.

Michelle argued that the public discourse surrounding Wallen often ignores the nuances of his personal relationships and the broader biases within the entertainment industry. She suggested that many fans and critics engage in performative outrage, asserting that the intense backlash—which included his exclusion from Academy of Country Music submissions—was not driven by the Black community itself. While she maintains that she does not condone the use of racial slurs, she insists that her support for Wallen stems from personal interactions and a desire to challenge how the industry treats artists under fire. Wallen, who publicly apologized for his 2021 actions, has previously urged his fanbase not to defend his use of the slur, accepting the professional consequences that followed the leak of the video.
