PowerBank secures key approvals for Ontario battery storage project

The 903 BESS project, which secured a 22-year contract through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s expedited procurement process in 2023, is structured to capture significant grid value. With a fixed capacity payment of $1,221 per megawatt per business day, the project outperforms the $876 average seen in similar recent storage tenders. The facility will operate under a joint venture, with PowerBank holding a 50% stake alongside a partnership of First Nations communities in Ontario.

Energy storage development has become a central priority as artificial intelligence and expanding data centers place unprecedented pressure on North American power grids. These systems provide critical reliability by performing energy arbitrage—discharging stored capacity during peak demand and recharging when prices are low. PowerBank, which maintains a development pipeline exceeding 1 gigawatt, expects to finalize its site plan shortly, marking its second major battery storage success in the province.
