Kennametal Reports Record Earnings Amid Tungsten Price Volatility

Kennametal Inc. posted a strong finish to fiscal 2026, with fourth-quarter sales climbing 43 percent to $737 million. The Pittsburgh-based industrial firm achieved record adjusted earnings per share of $2.96, buoyed by aggressive pricing strategies designed to offset the significant cost pressures within the global tungsten market.

CEO Sanjay Chowbey attributed the performance to a combination of volume growth in key industrial sectors and disciplined cost-improvement initiatives. Operating income for the quarter surged to $303 million, a marked improvement from the $31 million reported during the same period last year. This expansion was supported by favorable pricing dynamics in the Metal Cutting segment and restructuring savings, which helped mitigate the impact of rising compensation costs and general inflation.

While profitability metrics reached new highs, the company faced significant pressure on liquidity. Net cash flow from operating activities dipped to negative $4 million for the year, largely due to heavy investments in working capital. Specifically, the firm needed to secure inventory during a period of unprecedented tungsten price hikes, while providing advance payments to critical suppliers. Despite these cash flow hurdles, leadership remains optimistic about the year ahead. The company projects fiscal 2027 sales between $3.33 billion and $3.45 billion, signaling confidence that recent contract wins in the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors will sustain momentum.
