The survey of nearly 2,000 U.S. shoppers suggests that the final mile has become the primary battleground for retention. Forty percent of respondents have severed ties with a retailer entirely after a failed delivery, while 33% have done the same following a delay. The impact is often emotional: 22% of shoppers report losing sleep over shipping issues, and 20% claim a botched delivery has moved them to tears. These failures frequently disrupt personal milestones, with 45% of consumers stating that a late package has ruined a holiday or special event.
Retailers are also losing ground at the point of sale. Over half of shoppers have abandoned online carts due to insufficient delivery options, and 89% admit to choosing Amazon or Walmart over preferred brands specifically to secure a more reliable shipping experience. Catherine Dummitt, VP of Marketing at Veho, notes that consumers do not distinguish between the retailer and the carrier when things go wrong. Because customers hold the brand responsible for the doorstep experience, delivery quality has shifted from an operational metric to a critical driver of business performance. While 95% of shoppers prioritize speed, 92% emphasize the need for consistency and control, suggesting that the future of e-commerce lies in personalized delivery options that match the urgency of the specific order.
