Manulife Earnings Surge on Strong Insurance Growth and AI Integration

Manulife Financial Corporation reported a robust second quarter for 2026, driven by a 16% increase in core earnings per share and double-digit growth across its primary insurance business segments. The Toronto-based insurer saw net income climb to $2.1 billion, bolstered by disciplined execution and expansion in Asia and wealth management.

The company’s core earnings reached $1.9 billion, a 12% rise on a constant exchange rate basis compared to the same period last year. Performance was highlighted by a 21% jump in Asia’s core earnings and significant momentum in new business metrics, including a 21% increase in annualized premium equivalent sales. This growth reflects the firm's strategic focus on high-net-worth insurance solutions and the successful scaling of its agency force, which now boasts the highest increase in Million Dollar Round Table members among top global insurers.

Technological investment remained a central pillar of the quarterly performance. Manulife continues to integrate AI across its operations to improve underwriting efficiency and customer experience, earning top-tier industry recognition for its digital maturity. President and CEO Phil Witherington noted that the company is also refining its risk profile, citing a newly announced long-term care reinsurance transaction as a key step in strengthening the balance sheet. With a core return on equity of 16.3%, management signaled confidence in their ongoing capital deployment strategy, having returned $2.6 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks during the first half of the year.
