Federal investigators have already intercepted 55 shipments containing 355,683 violative units at U.S. ports, citing a lack of compliance with essential safety standards for lead, phthalates, and water beads. Many of these toys are sold through online marketplaces and discount retailers, often arriving without mandatory age grading or manufacturer identification. When these products tear, they release gels, liquids, or sand that can cause internal blockages if swallowed or chemical burns upon contact with skin.

The agency specifically cautions against the viral practice of heating these toys. Squishy materials can reach extreme temperatures and burst, releasing sticky, hot substances that adhere to skin and worsen thermal injuries. Consumers are urged to inspect toys for chemical odors, oily surfaces, or signs of deterioration. If a burn occurs, the CPSC advises flushing the area with cool running water for 20 minutes and seeking medical attention, rather than using ice or home remedies.
