Albertsons brings Safeway shopping to ChatGPT via new plugin

Albertsons Companies is integrating its Safeway brand into ChatGPT, allowing customers to build grocery carts through conversational AI. The move aims to streamline the shopping experience by letting users request items, discover products, and manage digital lists directly within the interface before finalizing their purchases on the Safeway website.

Shoppers can now interact with the Safeway plugin using natural language to reorder favorites, find sale items, or build lists based on specific recipes. By keeping the interface conversational, the company intends to reduce the friction often associated with navigating traditional digital storefronts. Users retain full control over their selections throughout the process, with the ability to review and modify items before being redirected to the main Safeway platform for checkout.

Jill Pavlovich, senior vice president of digital customer experience at Albertsons, noted that the initiative reflects growing consumer demand for AI-assisted shopping. The company frames this as a strategic effort to meet customers within the platforms they already frequent, prioritizing convenience without removing the shopper from the final decision-making loop.
