Mall of America Survey Reveals Shift Toward Experiential Shopping

Back-to-school season is no longer just a chore of checking off supply lists, as 66% of families now treat the trip as an outing that combines retail with dining and attractions. A new survey of 620 consumers highlights that while value remains a primary driver, the physical store environment is reclaiming its dominance.

The data confirms a robust preference for brick-and-mortar locations, with 97% of shoppers planning to visit stores either exclusively or in tandem with online platforms. This trend is particularly evident at shopping malls, which 54% of respondents identified as their preferred destination for seasonal preparations. Jill Renslow, Chief Business Development & Marketing Officer at Mall of America, noted that families are redefining value by seeking destinations that facilitate shared experiences rather than simple transactions. This shift toward tradition is further underscored by a rise in nostalgia, with 41% of shoppers actively selecting brands from their own childhoods to pass down to the next generation.

Despite the rapid integration of new technology in other retail sectors, artificial intelligence remains a minor influence, with only 10% of participants planning to use such tools for their shopping research. Instead, influence is concentrated among students and social media platforms, the latter of which has prompted 65% of families to purchase items after seeing them online. Financial priorities remain steady, as 73% of households plan to spend between $100 and $499 per student, with the largest portion of budgets allocated to clothing and footwear. These findings suggest that for modern families, the value of a shopping trip is measured as much by the entertainment provided as by the price tags on school supplies.
