Trump Weighs Diesel Export Ban as Energy Costs Mount

Facing mounting voter pressure and record-breaking fuel costs, President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing a 90-day ban on diesel exports. The move aims to stem price hikes triggered by his ongoing conflict with Iran, yet critics warn the policy risks triggering a global economic crisis for short-term political gain.

Average diesel prices have reached $6.52 per gallon, marking a 77% increase over the past year. With midterm elections looming, the White House is under pressure to provide relief, leading Trump to confirm he has discussed restricting exports to balance domestic supply. While some GOP lawmakers, including Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Ashley Hinson, have backed the proposal, energy experts caution that the intervention could backfire.

Bob McNally, president of Rapidan Energy Group, warned that a ban would damage the United States' reputation as a reliable investment destination for a generation. Economist Philip Verleger went further, comparing the potential fallout to Richard Nixon’s 1970s soybean embargo, noting that removing US supply from an already strained global market could double international prices. Despite these warnings, sources within the administration suggest officials are prioritizing immediate relief, viewing any negative consequences as a problem for December.
