Managing glucose levels in the neonatal intensive care unit remains a high-stakes challenge where physiological instability meets a scarcity of specialized digital tools. While insulin titration software has become standard in adult critical care to improve outcomes and reduce medication errors, the smallest patients have remained dependent on manual, paper-based protocols. For newborns and infants requiring continuous intravenous insulin for conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperglycemia of prematurity, the margin for dosing error is razor-thin.
Glytec CEO Patrick Cua noted that the company has spent two decades refining insulin safety protocols, yet infants have historically been the last to benefit from these advancements. The proposed Glucommander Pediatrics system aims to bridge this gap, extending the company’s existing clinical technology into the NICU and PICU environments. By securing the Breakthrough Device Designation, Glytec gains an expedited pathway to bring this prescription-only tool to clinicians, potentially offering a safer, technology-enabled alternative to the current standard of care for the most vulnerable hospital populations.
