UChicago Medicine Completes Construction of New Cancer Pavilion

The project serves as a direct response to a local health crisis where cancer death rates are nearly double the national average. Projections indicate that cancer incidence in the area will climb 19% by 2035, significantly outpacing the remainder of the Chicago metropolitan region. To counter these trends, the seven-story pavilion will consolidate specialists, clinical trials, and diagnostic services into a single, integrated environment.

Supported by a $75 million contribution from the AbbVie Foundation, the center is designed to handle an annual load of roughly 200,000 outpatient visits and 5,000 inpatient admissions. The building includes 80 private beds, reinforcing the institution's role as a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Following the ceremonial transfer of the site from Turner Construction, teams will spend the coming months outfitting clinical spaces and refining operational workflows ahead of an April 2027 opening.
