Minas Gerais Suspends Sigma Lithium Permits Following Federal Injunction

Federal Deputy Célia Xakriabá championed the enforcement action, highlighting the irony of Sigma executives celebrating at New York Climate Week while facing criminal complaints at home. The suspension by the State Environmental Foundation, or Feam, directly aligns with a September 4 federal injunction that nullified the company's rights to operate the site.

Legal pressure continues to mount against the miner. Xakriabá and fellow Deputy Duda Salabert recently petitioned the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Police, citing evidence that the company ignored court orders to cease operations. Residents of the Baú and Piauí Poço Dantas Quilombola communities report that the mine’s footprint persists, restricting movement and causing environmental degradation in the Jequitinhonha Valley.

Beyond the federal case, Sigma faces further scrutiny regarding an alleged breach of a separate agreement with the Minas Gerais State Public Prosecutor's Office. Under that legally binding Conduct Adjustment Agreement, the company was required to maintain road access for local families effectively landlocked by the mine's perimeter. Failure to comply with these terms carries significant daily financial penalties.
