JD Sports hits major RFID milestone as German market goes live

With Germany officially joining its RFID network this week, JD Sports has reached a significant operational milestone: 1,000 stores launched in just 14 months. The rollout marks the completion of the first phase of the retailer’s global digital transformation, shifting inventory management across its direct operations.

Dan McGrath, JD Group Customer Operations lead, confirmed the expansion via LinkedIn, noting that the company has now successfully integrated RFID across 2,700 of its 4,800 global locations. Beyond the raw store count, the initiative has fundamentally altered the retailer's product coverage, pushing digital identification from 40% to 73% of its total inventory.

McGrath emphasized that the technical deployment served as a catalyst for a deeper shift in retail culture. The program required store teams to abandon legacy processes and adopt new workflows, a transition he credits to the persistence of in-country champions who supported staff on the ground. As the retailer moves to integrate more brand partners into the system, the project aims to leverage improved inventory visibility to sharpen supply chain efficiency and enhance the overall customer experience.
