PwC: The growing AI divide threatens workforce stability

A deepening skills gap is fracturing the global workforce, as access to development resources drops even as AI adoption accelerates. While daily AI users report higher job security and confidence, 56% of employees remain stalled in the 'engine room,' lacking the support necessary to keep pace with rapid technological shifts.

PwC’s 2026 Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey reveals a precarious divergence. Although 64% of workers now utilize AI, only 51% report having access to essential learning and development resources—a sharp decline from 59% last year. This trend leaves the majority of staff vulnerable, particularly those whose skills are not currently viewed as scarce.

The report categorizes 56% of the workforce as the 'engine room,' a group that receives fewer rewards for challenging existing workflows or mastering new tools. Conversely, 'front-runners'—those with high AI proficiency and scarce skills—are thriving. They are significantly more likely to request promotions and report higher job satisfaction. However, this mobility is a double-edged sword for employers: 29% of these high-value workers indicate they are likely to jump to a new employer within the year.

Economic pressures further complicate the landscape. Only one-third of workers report having disposable income at month's end, an 8% drop year-on-year. For leaders, the mandate is clear: failing to bridge the development gap for the wider workforce risks both mass disengagement and the loss of top-tier talent to competitors.
