Blackbaud unveils Lantern, an AI model built for fundraising

While 85% of social impact professionals use artificial intelligence, only 10% of organizations report significant returns on their investment. To bridge this gap, Blackbaud introduced Lantern at bbcon 2026, a specialized language model designed to interpret philanthropic behavior rather than general internet-derived consumer patterns.

Developed in collaboration with Databricks, the new model leverages four decades of fundraising data and Blackbaud's Social Impact Signal Graph. Unlike general-purpose frontier models, Lantern focuses on the specific nuances of donor dynamics, retention strategies, and lifetime relationship building. The tool is designed to provide actionable intelligence for frontline fundraisers who navigate complex social impact environments.

Mike Gianoni, CEO of Blackbaud, noted that the model is trained on philanthropy rather than the open internet, allowing it to understand the 'why, when, and how' of giving. The company plans to embed Lantern directly into its Platform for Good, with initial capabilities appearing in Raiser’s Edge NXT and Agents for Good by 2027. Early input from organizations including Boston University and YMCA of the North is guiding the model’s development to ensure it meets sector-specific goals.
