Maryland Stem Cell Fund Awards $4.8 Million to Regenerative Research

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission continues to see a pipeline maturing beyond early-stage laboratory discovery. According to executive director Ruchika Nijhara, the intensity of this funding cycle stems from technologies progressing into clinical translation and manufacturing—stages that demand significantly higher investment than initial research. The current awards include 3.08 million dollars for new faculty initiatives, 1.35 million dollars for technology validation, and nearly 400,000 dollars to support commercial product development at firms like SereNeuro Therapeutics.

Since the Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006, the fund has distributed over 250 million dollars to more than 770 projects. This latest infusion supports investigators at institutions including the University of Maryland, Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University. The Commission plans to open the next round of applications for the 2027 cycle in late October.
