TUPLS and transcosmos pilot AI-driven clinical training for pharmacists

The Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Science is partnering with transcosmos to deploy an AI-powered dialogue platform designed to bridge the gap between academic study and clinical practice. The collaboration aims to replace traditional, resource-heavy role-play exercises with automated, scenario-based training for pharmacy students and working professionals.

The initiative centers on the trans-AI Tutor, a tool originally engineered by transcosmos to standardize training within its contact center operations. By integrating the university’s clinical curriculum with the company’s service management expertise, the platform allows students to engage in simulated patient interactions. These personas can be adjusted for age, personality, and medical history, providing a repetitive, faculty-supervised environment that operates independently of staffing constraints.

Beginning in November 2026, the pilot program will target fourth-year students at the university. Beyond foundational training, the system will eventually support complex clinical case studies and provide automated feedback based on evaluation criteria derived from professional service quality standards. The project also addresses the long-term need for continuous education, offering a digital architecture that adapts to future regulatory and legislative shifts in the pharmaceutical sector.

Internal data from transcosmos highlights the potential impact of this technology, noting that previous deployments within its own contact centers replaced 2,945 supervisor hours and reduced training time by 50%. By offloading repetitive foundational practice to the AI, faculty members can pivot toward individualized instruction and complex curriculum design, ensuring that future pharmacists are better equipped for the evolving demands of the medical landscape.
