WVU Health System Expands Into Pennsylvania With Five New Hospitals

Five Pennsylvania hospitals—Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe, and Westmoreland—officially transitioned into the West Virginia University Health System on October 1. Moving away from the Independence Health System brand, the facilities will now operate under the WVU Medicine banner, bringing 925 beds and 7,000 employees into the network.

The integration follows a successful partnership between WVU Medicine Westmoreland Hospital and the Golisano Children’s Hospital, which began in early 2025 to bolster neonatal services. This regional expansion connects a population base of 750,000 across 10 Pennsylvania counties to the broader academic health system. Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, emphasized that the move is intended to build upon existing local success while fostering long-term clinical growth.

To support this transition, the system has pledged an $800 million investment over the next five years. These funds are earmarked for modernizing critical infrastructure, including the emergency department at Butler Memorial Hospital and the Westmoreland campus. The investment also targets the expansion of clinical services and medical programs to ensure the facilities remain sustainable for future generations. Current patients can access transition details, including provider and insurance information, via the system’s dedicated western Pennsylvania portal.
