Karl-Anthony Towns Joins Sanofi to Promote COVID-19 Vaccination

NBA champion Karl-Anthony Towns is stepping off the court to lead a new awareness campaign for Sanofi, urging the public to prioritize COVID-19 prevention. Drawing on his own family’s difficult experience with the virus, the athlete is advocating for informed consultations with healthcare providers regarding available vaccine options.

The campaign centers on Nuvaxovid, a protein-based, non-mRNA vaccine for which Sanofi now holds the market authorization. As the respiratory virus season approaches, the partnership aims to reach those at higher risk, including older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions, by highlighting a technological alternative to mRNA platforms. Towns, who emphasizes that his personal health strategy has evolved significantly due to his family's history with the virus, will utilize digital and social media channels to normalize discussions about preventative care.

Kimberly Tutwiler, head of vaccines for Sanofi in North America, noted that the initiative seeks to address persistent gaps in vaccination coverage. By leveraging the profile of an elite athlete, the company hopes to demystify the decision-making process for those who remain hesitant. Nuvaxovid is currently indicated for adults aged 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 12 to 64 who face a high risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19. Sanofi is continuing to expand the vaccine's availability across global markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada.
