Royal Caribbean and MSC Break Ground on New Okinawa Cruise Terminal

Royal Caribbean and MSC Break Ground on New Okinawa Cruise Terminal

A traditional ceremony at Naha Port on October 5, 2026, officially launched construction of a new, state-of-the-art cruise terminal. The project, a joint venture between the Naha Port Authority and a partnership of Royal Caribbean Group and MSC Cruises, aims to solidify Okinawa’s status as a primary hub for East Asian maritime tourism.

The facility is being developed by Cruise Port Naha G.K., a joint venture between CTL Maritime and RCL Cruises Ltd. Under the terms of the Cruise Hub Formation Agreement signed in August 2026, the partnership will oversee both the construction and long-term operation of the site. Completion is scheduled for March 2028, with the terminal designed to accommodate the industry's most advanced vessels.

Naha’s strategic location offers year-round accessibility, making it a critical entry point for regional itineraries. By modernizing the port, stakeholders intend to boost passenger capacity and meet rising demand for Asian cruise vacations. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja joined executives from both cruise lines to mark the start of the project, which follows the port's 2019 designation by the Japanese government as an International Cruise Ship Hub Formation Port. Jason Liberty, CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, emphasized that the infrastructure investment represents a long-term commitment to the local community, while Pierfrancesco Vago of MSC Group highlighted the project's role in expanding year-round access for both international and regional travelers.
