DEWALT Wins Tech Award for Autonomous Concrete Drilling Robot

Over 385,000 holes drilled with 99% accuracy—this is the performance record that earned DALE™, a fleet-capable, downward-drilling robot, a spot in Fast Company's 2026 Next Big Things in Tech Awards. Developed with August Robotics, the machine stands as the only tool-industry entry recognized in this year's program.

The robot, designed to tackle the high-pressure demands of hyperscale data center construction, represents a pivot toward automation in heavy infrastructure. By automating the repetitive, high-volume task of drilling for server rack supports and MEP installations, the system allows crews to bypass traditional manual labor constraints. During its pilot phase, the technology demonstrated a capacity to operate 10 times faster than conventional methods, successfully cutting project schedules by over 300 weeks across 44 construction phases.

Bill Beck, President of Tools & Outdoor at Stanley Black & Decker, noted that the innovation aims to solve the industry's persistent dilemma: increasing output while maintaining safety and precision. Beyond its raw speed, the platform integrates AI-driven quality assurance and automatic dust extraction, ensuring that sites remain optimized for immediate downstream work. As data center expansion continues to accelerate globally, the integration of such autonomous fleets marks a shift in how major construction firms manage site efficiency and long-term project timelines.
