The analysis from the Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) Action Fund highlights a 53-fold increase in billionaire election spending since the 2010 Citizens United ruling. With less than 20% of these donations subject to standard regulatory caps, the landscape of American campaigning has shifted heavily toward unlimited, high-dollar influence. Jodie Rubenstein, executive director of the ATF Action Fund, argues that this trend allows the ultra-wealthy to effectively purchase systemic tax advantages while eroding democratic integrity.
Leading the spending are Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, whose families have contributed a combined $149 million. Their donations notably include support for the super PAC Leading the Future, which actively lobbies against strict artificial intelligence regulations. Other major contributors include George Soros, Jeff Yass, and Elon Musk. The top 15 spenders alone account for $962 million in outlays, with the Republican Party emerging as the primary beneficiary. Specifically, Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC has secured over $222 million from this cohort, with half of its total funding originating from the list of billionaires tracked by the report.
