Shahan Ohanessian, founder of VenHub, describes his company’s smart store as the result of a vending machine marrying a retail shop. Operating as a fully autonomous, sealed unit, the system utilizes robotic arms to fulfill customer orders, aiming to eliminate traditional retail challenges like shrinkage and staffing costs.
The current VenHub model, a 22-foot unit, functions as a high-tech locker system for high-traffic environments. Shoppers place orders via a mobile app, and internal robotics—nicknamed Bob and Peter—prepare the goods for collection in under 30 seconds. Ohanessian, who previously worked as an Amazon partner, launched the first unit in October 2025 at locations including LA Union Station. He argues that unlike frictionless stores that rely on cameras and RFID, his units are entirely unattended, removing the security risks that plague current retail models.Expansion plans are moving quickly. Later this year, the company will introduce a modular 4-foot version, allowing operators to scale their store size according to specific space requirements. While the units are currently restricted to the US, Ohanessian intends to begin international expansion in the third quarter. His long-term vision extends beyond standalone units; he plans to develop AI systems capable of scanning and taking over the management of existing retail storefronts to provide 24/7 autonomous operation.
