Relativity Acquires Gavel to Bridge Legal Intelligence and Drafting

Relativity has acquired Gavel, an AI-native legal technology firm, in a move to extend its legal data intelligence platform directly into Microsoft Word. The integration aims to break down the traditional barrier between evidence analysis in RelativityOne and the drafting of final legal documents by legal teams.

The acquisition brings Gavel’s document automation and AI-driven drafting tools into the Relativity ecosystem. Historically, lawyers have analyzed evidence and organized case strategy within RelativityOne, only to move that work into separate Microsoft Word files. This disconnect often left critical data and context behind. By embedding Gavel’s capabilities, Relativity plans to allow attorneys to draft, redline, and finalize documents within Word while maintaining a live sync back to the original matter in RelativityOne.

Phil Saunders, CEO of Relativity, stated that the move is part of a broader strategy to support the full arc of legal work where lawyers spend most of their time. Chris Brown, Chief Product Officer, added that the integration will enable drafting against the full context of a legal matter, effectively turning the platform into a continuous system of action. Gavel, founded by former Sidley Austin associate Dorna Moini, currently serves legal professionals across 28 countries with its combination of generative AI and rules-based workflows. Relativity intends to maintain Gavel’s regular operations as it gradually weaves these capabilities into the RelativityOne cloud platform.
