The award, established in 2014, honors the legacy of Dr. Bonnie Strickland, a former director at the Maternal and Child Health Bureau known for her work in creating comprehensive vision systems for youth. According to Donna Fishman, executive director at the NCCVEH, the prize highlights those who advance children's learning and health through innovative programming and strategic partnerships.
Candidates may range from community leaders and healthcare providers to educators and family advocates. Nominees must demonstrate measurable impact in areas such as public awareness, infrastructure development, surveillance, or the reduction of health inequities. The winner will be honored during a virtual ceremony on September 11, 2026, where they will receive a plaque and an opportunity to present their work to a national audience. Last year, the program recognized Eye Thrive for its Wraparound Vision Services, joining a list of past recipients that includes the Alcon Children's Vision Center and Dr. Donny W. Suh of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute.
