University of Phoenix Examines Generational Leadership Through Veterans' Eyes

At 101 and 104 years old, retired Command Sergeant Major Curtis L. Brown and Major Fannie Griffin-McClendon offer a century of perspective on duty and resilience. Their experiences anchor the upcoming University of Phoenix webinar, "Service, Purpose, and Leadership Across Generations," scheduled for June 18 at 11 a.m. MST.

The virtual session, part of the university's Bridging Perspectives series, aims to connect historical lessons of service with modern workplace challenges. Saray Lopez, director of strategic initiatives, notes that the discussion seeks to center purpose in professional development, using the lived experiences of seasoned leaders to guide current students, faculty, and employers.

Featured speakers John Ramirez and Billy Mikels will draw heavily from the legacies of Brown and McClendon. Major McClendon, a veteran of the historic all-Black, female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion during World War II, provides a rare look at leadership under extreme pressure. Similarly, Brown, one of the first Black Master Sergeants promoted to Sergeant Major, brings three decades of Army experience to the conversation. The webinar provides a framework for attendees to apply lessons on discipline and mentorship to their own roles in organizations and communities.
