The damaged unit was one of two primary machines responsible for moving coal into and out of terminal stockpiles. While the second device remains fully operational following recent refurbishment, the loss of the first machine creates a significant bottleneck for the Tennessee-based mining company. Alpha Metallurgical Resources, which holds a 65% ownership stake in the terminal, currently utilizes the site for the bulk of its export shipments.
Company officials are assessing the extent of the mechanical failure to establish a repair timeline. In the interim, the operator is shifting logistics to neighboring terminals to mitigate the impact on global steel industry supply chains. No injuries were reported in connection with the June 14 storm, but the terminal remains under pressure to restore full capacity as quickly as possible.
