SIGGRAPH 2026 Spotlights Global Storytelling and Blockbuster Innovation

SIGGRAPH 2026, the premier conference for computer graphics, returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center from 19–23 July, highlighting the intersection of advanced technology and narrative craft. This year’s event showcases a broadened animation festival and deep-dive production sessions featuring major industry studios.

The Computer Animation Festival, an Academy Award-qualifying event, expanded its eligibility criteria this year to include films exceeding 10 minutes. This shift allowed organizers to capture a more diverse range of international narratives. The 2026 top honors went to films exploring the intersection of historical memory and future identity: the South African production Apart, directed by Pola Maneli, took Best in Show; the French student project Beyond Words earned the Student Project award; and the U.S.-based film 18 Months received the Jury’s Choice. According to Festival Director Marina Antunes, the selection reflects a global trend of using animation to examine social justice and inclusivity.

Beyond the screenings, the Production Sessions program provides a technical window into high-profile projects, including Wētā FX’s work on Avatar: Fire and Ash, which utilized a new simulation framework to manage over 3,100 shots. Other sessions feature NASA’s cinematic visualization for the Artemis II mission and Pixar’s technical pipeline for the upcoming film Hoppers. These presentations aim to bridge the gap between creative concept and pipeline execution, offering both industry veterans and newcomers insights into the collaborative efforts required to bring complex digital worlds to the screen.
