Lakewood-Amedex Secures Australian Patent for Bisphosphocin Compounds

With more than six million annual deaths attributed to antimicrobial resistance, Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics is bolstering its defenses. The Sarasota-based firm announced the issuance of an Australian composition of matter patent, further shielding its Bisphosphocin class of broad-spectrum antimicrobials currently under development for complex urinary and pulmonary infections.

The patent, titled "Antimicrobial Compounds, Compositions, and Uses Thereof," was officially issued by IP Australia on March 5, 2026. This addition brings the company’s total intellectual property footprint to 72 granted patents and 29 pending applications across key global markets, including the United States, China, India, and the European Patent Office. Kelvin Cooper, Chief Executive Officer of Lakewood-Amedex, emphasized that the expanded portfolio provides a firmer foundation for addressing the escalating global crisis of drug-resistant pathogens. The company remains focused on clinical-stage development for strains such as MRSA and VRE, aiming to translate its proprietary chemical platform into viable treatments for high-need patient populations.
