Mitchell Modell Returns to Retail with New York Championship Tribute

Six years after the collapse of Modell’s Sporting Goods, Mitchell B. Modell is re-entering the retail market with a digital-first venture. The launch coincides with the New York Knicks’ championship celebration, pairing local sports pride with a personal mission to fund prostate cancer screenings through a limited-edition apparel line.

The new online platform, MitchellModells.com, debuts with a $20 championship T-shirt featuring a New York City pigeon—a mascot Modell selected to represent the city’s grit and resilience. Beyond the branding, the project carries a significant charitable weight. Modell has pledged $5 from every sale toward free PSA screenings for underserved individuals, aiming to sell 100,000 units to reach a $500,000 fundraising goal.

For the 72-year-old entrepreneur, the initiative is rooted in his own history with the disease. Having survived stage IIIC melanoma and losing his father to prostate cancer, Modell views the venture as both a professional comeback and a health advocacy platform. The site will focus on non-licensed, sports-inspired merchandise rather than the traditional retail footprint of his former family business. Modell plans to mark the official launch on June 22nd with a press event at The Kimberley Hotel in Manhattan.
