High Flying Hangars Breaks Ground on Frederick Airport Expansion

A golden shovel broke ground at Frederick Municipal Airport on June 22, 2026, marking the first new hangar construction at the site in over two decades. The 11.45-acre development aims to alleviate a persistent shortage of aviation storage space serving the northern Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor, airport management, and High Flying Hangars CEO Kenny Hinkes gathered to initiate the project, which will unfold in two distinct phases. The first stage includes 44 hangars and a central clubhouse, followed by a second phase adding roughly 34 units. The clubhouse serves as a communal anchor, offering meeting spaces, a commercial kitchen, and a sky deck overlooking the flight line.

Designed to support the region's rapid growth, the hangars range from 1,245 to 8,000 square feet. Each unit features American-made steel construction, insulated walls, and diamond bi-fold doors equipped with smart security technology. Larger units include dedicated bathrooms and specialized drainage systems, reflecting a shift toward high-end amenities for business and general aviation users. Interested owners can currently view site plans and secure reservations for the upcoming build.
