Gates Expands Belt Drive Portfolio to Reach Budget-Conscious Cyclists

For two decades, Gates belt drives have dominated the premium eBike and mountain bike sectors with their clean, low-maintenance performance. Now, the Denver-based manufacturer is pivoting toward the mass market, launching three new sprocket families designed to displace traditional chain-based drivetrains in entry-level and mid-range bicycle segments.

The expansion introduces the CRUISE, CRUISE PLUS, and COMMUTE product lines, each tailored to specific price points and usage demands. The entry-level CRUISE targets budget-conscious consumers, while CRUISE PLUS offers increased durability for everyday riding and mid-range eBikes. The COMMUTE variant specifically targets urban mobility, engineered to handle mid-motor systems with torque outputs up to 75 Nm.

Tom Pitstick, President of Americas and Global Mobility at Gates, stated that the move leverages the company’s material science expertise to provide original equipment manufacturers with a more scalable path for their product lineups. By offering these tiered performance options, Gates aims to lower the barrier for manufacturers to integrate belt systems into bikes that were previously restricted to metal chains. These components are available globally, supported by technical integration resources for OEM partners looking to streamline their production processes.
