The labor dispute centers on allegations that management refused to bargain in good faith, specifically by firing a member of the worker bargaining committee. According to local union leadership, the company has stalled negotiations over fundamental contract components, including overtime pay, health benefits, and wage increases. These employees handle the entire production cycle, from cultivation and processing to packaging and distribution for Illinois dispensaries.
Jesse Case, director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division, characterized the standoff as an avoidable conflict, arguing that a major multistate operator possesses the resources to meet industry standards. The union is demanding parity for cultivation staff with the conditions currently enjoyed by Teamsters employed at Ascend’s retail dispensaries. With operations spanning from Chicago to Carbondale, the union claims this work stoppage serves as a direct response to what they describe as a pattern of corporate disrespect toward the workforce.
