LONGi and FARIA RENEWABLES link solar expansion to Greek history

During the excavation of the 45.5MW Athamas solar site in Almyros, archaeologists unearthed prehistoric and Byzantine burial monuments, forcing a delicate calibration between Greece’s modern energy transition and its ancient heritage. Construction continues under the supervision of archaeological authorities alongside the installation of advanced photovoltaic technology.

LONGi Solar Europe has finalized an agreement to supply over 125,000 Hi-MO9 solar modules to FARIA RENEWABLES for two major utility-scale projects. The Athamas facility in Almyros and the 36MW Mykonos project in Farsala will utilize LONGi’s HPBC 2.0 back contact technology, designed to maximize energy output in high-irradiance conditions. These installations represent a significant scaling of renewable capacity in the Thessaly region.

Once completed, the Athamas site is projected to generate 80,000MWh of electricity annually, providing power to approximately 16,000 households and offsetting 50,000 tons of carbon emissions. FARIA RENEWABLES CEO Thalia Valkouma described the projects as a milestone for the company, noting that the combination of high-performance hardware and optimized site layouts serves as a new benchmark for regional Power Purchase Agreements. According to Athanasios Plainos, LONGi’s country manager for Greece and Cyprus, the deployment of this next-generation technology aims to reduce balance-of-system costs while accelerating the broader transition toward clean energy across the country.
