Thousands Rally in Caracas Demanding Release of President Maduro

Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Caracas on Wednesday, chanting for the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. The march, led by public workers, signaled a deepening defiance against the United States following a January 3 military intervention that resulted in over 100 deaths.

Protesters vowed to maintain their presence in the capital until the couple is returned. Capital District Head of Government Nahum Fernández framed the resistance as a battle for national unity, warning that any collaboration with foreign interests constitutes a betrayal of the state. Labor leader Anais Herrera echoed this sentiment, describing the current political climate as a struggle for sovereignty against what demonstrators labeled an imperial invasion.

The detention of the Venezuelan leadership follows a US-led operation involving special forces, airstrikes, and a naval blockade. While the Trump administration has formally indicted Maduro on charges including narco-terrorism and weapons possession, the president has maintained his innocence, declaring himself a prisoner of war. The legal standoff occurs alongside ongoing US-led seizures of oil tankers and severe economic sanctions.

Simultaneously, a shift in rhetoric emerged from the acting government. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez reported a constructive phone call with Donald Trump regarding the release of political detainees, a move the US president praised on social media as progress toward stability. Despite this diplomatic overture, Trump has openly signaled his intent to control Venezuela's petroleum resources. Tensions remain high as the White House prepares to host opposition leader María Corina Machado, even as Trump has publicly questioned her electoral viability.
