UN Report Details Unprecedented Destruction of Gaza Infrastructure

As of April 12, Israeli military operations have killed or injured 5% of Gaza's population, leaving thousands more buried beneath the ruins of their own homes. The report, issued by the UNDP and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, highlights that the current volume of debris dwarfs the 2.4 million tons recorded after the 2014 conflict. UNDP administrator Achim Steiner emphasized that the human and economic costs are compounding daily, threatening the future of generations to come.

Projections indicate that if the military campaign continues for two more months, 1.86 million people will fall into poverty, effectively erasing two decades of progress in life expectancy and education. ESCWA executive secretary Rola Dashti stated that Gaza is being rendered entirely dependent on external aid, as the territory’s productive capacity has been dismantled. This dire outlook arrives as the Israeli government signals a potential ground invasion of Rafah, a city currently sheltering 1.4 million displaced people, prompting warnings from the World Health Organization that such an escalation could trigger a humanitarian catastrophe.
