The facility captures high-purity carbon dioxide generated during ethanol fermentation, compressing the gas before sending it through a dedicated pipeline to a Class VI injection well located six miles from the site. This permanent underground storage follows a rigorous three-year permitting process overseen by the EPA, ensuring compliance with federal safety and environmental standards. By integrating this technology, PureField aims to achieve negative or near-zero GREET carbon intensity scores across its production pathways.
Beyond the operational milestone, CEO Aaron Buettner signaled that the company has already begun planning an expansion intended to double its current ethanol production and sequestration capacity. This strategy focuses on creating higher-value markets for local Kansas wheat and sorghum growers, effectively linking industrial decarbonization with regional agricultural demand. The project serves as a cornerstone for the company’s goal of strengthening its integrated food and biofuel platform while maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving low-carbon energy sector.
