Democrats Court Yair Lapid as Netanyahu Alternative Despite Expansionist Views

A group of Democratic senators met Wednesday with former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid, seeking a potential political reset as domestic pressure mounts over the war in Gaza. While often framed as a moderate alternative to Benjamin Netanyahu, Lapid has openly advocated for an expansive, biblically-defined Israeli state.

The meeting, hosted by Sen. Jacky Rosen, included several high-profile Democrats such as Cory Booker, Alex Padilla, and Michael Bennet. Lapid urged the lawmakers to maintain unwavering support for Israel, framing his opposition coalition as a path to restoring traditional bipartisan ties. Western media frequently depicts Lapid as a secular, institutionalist foil to Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition. However, his recent policy positions suggest little daylight between his vision and the current government’s aggressive territorial ambitions.

When questioned about the potential for Israeli expansion, Lapid explicitly invoked biblical mandates, suggesting that the state’s borders should be as broad as possible, potentially extending to Iraq. He has dismissed humanitarian concerns regarding the conflict in Gaza, previously justifying a total siege and endorsing the forced displacement of the Palestinian population. Furthermore, Lapid has positioned himself as a hawk on Iran, calling for the destruction of the nation's leadership and the targeting of its energy infrastructure. Although he once paid lip service to a two-state solution, his primary coalition partner, Naftali Bennett, remains a staunch opponent of Palestinian statehood.
