Marlon Wayans Calls Spanking a Failure of Communication

“Don’t hit ‘em. Don’t spank your kids, because it shows that you’re a poor communicator,” Marlon Wayans said during a recent radio interview. The actor and comedian, known for his vocal support of his transgender son, argues that physical punishment serves only to turn a child into an enemy rather than a friend.

Wayans, appearing on Los Angeles station 92.3, emphasized that while many parents view spanking as a necessary tool for discipline, it ultimately creates lasting resentment. He contends that hitting a child is a sign that a parent lacks the verbal skills to reach them, suggesting that physical force does more to damage the long-term relationship than to teach a lesson.

His perspective aligns with findings from the American Academy of Pediatrics. In a 2018 statement, the organization noted that physical punishment is linked to higher rates of defiance, aggressive behavior, and increased risk for mental health disorders. Experts like Dr. Karen Estrella suggest that while spanking might produce temporary compliance through fear, it often triggers secondary negative behaviors. Instead, clinicians advocate for positive reinforcement and disciplinary alternatives, such as time-outs.

This is not the first time the “Scary Movie” star has used his platform to advocate for a more empathetic approach to parenting. He previously shared his journey toward accepting his transgender son, describing how he moved through the five stages of grief to reach a state of unconditional support. For Wayans, whether it involves navigating gender identity or daily discipline, the priority remains protecting the bond with his children.
