InfraRed Capital Partners Acquires Majority Stake in Rail Modal Group

More than 1,200 unit trains have moved across the U.S. via Rail Modal Group, a logistics platform now under the majority control of InfraRed Capital Partners. The acquisition aims to scale RMG's inland terminal operations, which bridge the gap between agricultural producers in the Midwest and international shipping ports.

Founded in 2018 by Greg Oberting, RMG specializes in containerized export solutions, consolidating agricultural freight onto 100-car unit trains bound for West Coast ports. This process replaces approximately 200 million truck miles, functioning as a vital link in the $1.5 trillion U.S. agricultural sector. Oberting will remain with the company as CEO, steering the next phase of expansion alongside the new majority owner.

Filip Guz, Partner and Head of Americas Investments at InfraRed, noted that the firm plans to leverage its infrastructure expertise to broaden RMG’s service capabilities and develop new terminal locations. While the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed, the partnership signals a long-term commitment to enhancing the resilience of the North American supply chain through increased intermodal capacity.
